The 5th Annual Top Blacks in Healthcare Gala (TBH), presented by BlackDoctor.org (BDO) in conjunction with The George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, was the premier destination last month for networking, health, and wellness. This year the gala, which was held April 26th at the Park Hyatt hotel in Washington, D.C., honored 15 of the most esteemed black healthcare professionals for their accomplishments in what was truly a night to remember.
One of the night’s highlights was the passionate keynote address by Dr. William Carson. Bill, as he introduced himself to the audience. talked about his childhood and how his upbringing shaped his lifelong inquisitiveness. He described how that passion for “why” pushed him through medical school when some of his white peers were sometimes afraid of him simply because he was a black man.
Bill is President and Chief Executive Officer of Otsuka Pharmaceutical Development & Commercialization, Inc. (OPDC); a member of the Otsuka Group. He has a track record of successful clinical development of pharmaceutical compounds leading to worldwide regulatory authority approvals and oversees the development of Otsuka’s global compounds.
He led the enterprise-wide reorganization of Pharmacovigilance and Safety for Otsuka. Dr. Carson represented Otsuka on the board of directors of PhRMA. He is on the board of directors of OPDC, Avanir, Inc., and is the board chair of ODH, Inc.
He is currently the Board Chair Emeritus of the Sphinx Organization of the Sphinx Organization, which promotes diversity in the arts. Dr. Carson is a board-certified psychiatrist and holds an A.B. Degree from Harvard College and an M.D. degree from Case Western Reserve University.
He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the National Medical Association, and the Executive Leadership Council.
His speech inspired a room full of his peers, and a live virtual audience, by reminding all to persevere through challenges with intellect, charm, and a great sense of humor.
Enjoy the speech for yourself above, and prepare to be inspired to strive higher.
