Looking for a way to calm your mind and body? Trying to find some stress relief and relaxation? Float therapy, also known as sensory deprivation tank therapy, just might be the solution for you.
I personally experience back pain and aching muscles often, so I am always willing to try new practices and therapies to find some comfort. Float therapy was recommended to me, and I must say it’s been a complete game-changer for me. When I first heard about float therapy, I was like ok, I get in a pool or tub and just float. Lol. I was clueless. I was thinking how in the world is floating around going to help me with pain relief. Let me tell you..it works!
My initial reaction was “Oh, this is going to be great!” I walked into a dimmed, quiet, cozy and warm room. The float tank had blue lights that made you feel calm and at peace, immediately. I also loved that the room was soundproof, so you couldn’t hear any outside noise. The heated tank that you float in is big enough for your entire body to stretch out comfortably, and it is filled with typically 800-1,000 pounds of Epsom salt and water. Due to the high salt concentration of the tank, it makes it super easy for you to float on your back with ease.
The vibes in the room encourage you to go into a meditative state (a state of deep relaxation in the mind and body, where awareness is heightened and thoughts are not entangled) while floating. My body and mind became extremely calm.

Float therapy has many health benefits, including:
- Pain relief. Float therapy eases pain and swelling throughout the body, aching muscles/ muscle tension, back pain, neck pain and relieves you of migraines. It can also relieve chronic pain from conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia, which is a chronic condition that causes pain and tenderness in the muscles and soft tissues throughout the body.
- Mental health. Due to the lack of stimulation in float therapy, it can help with stress, anxiety, depression, and sleep patterns and provide mental clarity.
- Physical health. Float therapy increases blood flow and improves focus. You’ll also find that float therapy is great for your skin. The high salt concentration in the water can help soothe irritated skin, reduce skin inflammation, and promote healing of the skin. It may also help with conditions like psoriasis, eczema, and acne on the body.
- Brain health. Float therapy stimulates the right side of the brain. For all my creative spirits, the right side of the brain is associated with creativity. Also, intuition, and feelings.
Now, because I want you to have the most amazing float therapy experience, you should take into account if you have any of the following:
- Claustrophobia (extreme fear of confined spaces)
- Open wounds, as they will burn/cause significant irritation due to the Epsom salt. In addition, it will compromise the cleanliness of the flotation tank.
- Low blood pressure, as high Epsom salt concentration can further lower blood pressure. This can be a great health risk.
- Epilepsy (a chronic brain disorder that causes repeated seizures due to abnormal electrical signals in the brain). Due to sensory deprivation and altered states of consciousness, there is a risk of injury if a seizure occurs while in the float therapy tank.
Speak with a trusted healthcare professional (before you try float therapy) if you have any of the above. If you are seeking a healthcare professional, check out our free doctor search.
