After the urging of his doctor to change his diet and exercise habits, rapper, Rick Ross, and saved his life by losing over 90 lbs and adopting a healthier lifestyle.

In fact, after suffering two seizures in less than 24 hours in 2013, the “Bawse” found himself sitting in the waiting room of a very expensive doctor’s office. “I was the only black dude, and the rest was 55- to 80-year-old white males sitting in the room,” he says. “It was all silence and we all was kind of just looking at each other, like, ‘What the f*ck he here for?’”

Ross watched as elderly Caucasian male after elderly Caucasian male was called by the nurse. Finally, it was his turn. The doctor broke it down for him. “He told me I didn’t have high blood pressure, but I was hypertensive, which is a phase under having high blood pressure. And that’s when I said right then, ‘Yo, what’s my biggest enemy?’”

The doctor checked his chart. “Right now, for you, based on everything you wrote down: sodas.” Soda, wasn’t the only thing, but it was a starting point that Ross remembers.

Ross discussed his weight loss plan of attack and routine in the new issue of Men’s Health magazine revealing that he’s not only lighter in weight, he feels good about life. “I’m happy,” Ross told the magazine. “I’m still losing weight, and now I’m starting to build hard muscle in places.”

How Did He Lose the Weight?

In order to drop the weight, instead of going for a fad diet or cleanse to drop the weight fast, he chose a slower, more lasting route. Besides exercising with friends, and creating a personal version of Cross Fit (a.k.a. “Ross Fit”), which he does four days a week, the Maybach Music Group boss works with a personal chef, and doesn’t deprive himself of guilty pleasures.

These days, Ross is all about portion control. He’s only allowed to indulge in eateries like Wingstop and Checkers one or twice a week, and between the hours of noon and 5 p.m.

“If I quit all the things I loved cold turkey, I knew it would only be so long before I went back to my old ways,” he explained.

The kind of seizures like Ross had, spells during which normal brain activity is interrupted and involuntary muscle spasms are common, can be caused by alcohol. Alcohol can cause seizures in a variety of different ways; binge drinking, alcohol withdrawals, and adverse reactions to drink ingredients can all put you at increased risk for a seizure. Seizures related to each of these causes will not necessarily have distinct symptoms, but each cause calls for a specific medical treatment.

How Rick Ross Got His Start

William Leonard Roberts II (born January 28, 1976), known professionally as Rick Ross, is an American rapper. An influential figure in modern hip hop music, Rick Ross has become known for his “booming” vocal performance, “larger than life” persona, and vivid lyrical imagery. His lyrics form the hardships of street life and black market economic activity into a rags to riches narrative, often describing affluence, wealth, and luxury.

Prior to releasing his debut single, “Hustlin'” in March 2006, Ross was the subject of a bidding war—receiving offers from Diddy’s Bad Boy Entertainment and Irv Gotti’s Murder Inc.—and ultimately signed a multimillion-dollar deal with Jay-Z on Def Jam Recordings. In August of that year, his debut studio album, Port of Miami (2006) peaked atop the Billboard 200 chart upon release, along with his second and third studio albums, Trilla (2008) and Deeper Than Rap (2009). His fourth album, Teflon Don (2010) spawned the single “Aston Martin Music” (featuring Drake and Chrisette Michele)—which received triple platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA)—while his fifth and sixth albums, God Forgives, I Don’t (2012) and Mastermind (2014) peaked the Billboard 200 twice more.

Ross founded the record label Maybach Music Group (MMG) in 2008, through which he has signed artists including Meek Mill, Wale, French Montana, and Omarion, among others. MMG entered a joint venture with Def Jam and later Epic Records to release his subsequent studio albums: Hood Billionaire (2014), Black Market (2015), Rather You Than Me (2017), Port of Miami 2 (2019), and Richer Than I Ever Been (2021). After which, it entered a joint venture with Gamma to release his collaborative album, Too Good to Be True (2023) with Meek Mill. Ross is the recipient of nine Grammy Award nominations, and has been named “Man of the Year” by hip hop magazine The Source in 2010 and 2011, as well as “Hottest MC in the Game” by MTV in the latter year.
