Jasmine Sullivan's voice is powerful, soulful and full of emotion. Critics and fans agree that this young starlet is super talented and often underrated. Her debut single "Need U Bad," produced by Missy Elliott, reached number one on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, while her second single, "Bust Your Windows," peaked at number four.
But after her Grammy-nominated successful debut album you didn't hear from her anymore. It was even said that she retired from music after one album. So what really happened?
“It was a lot of different things that made me feel like I needed to take a break. And it was a lot of personal things,” she shares. “It was some things as far as the industry and my work. But what’s most important to me is that I did get that time to kind of mature and in that time, I’m still working on it, but I feel like I’m so much more comfortable with myself and who I am and I what I have to offer to the world and to the industry. Moreso than when I first started.”
“I put a lot of work into my album and a lot of work into just myself period,” she adds. “I just feel like it’s time. I don’t need to hide anymore. I'm just so much more comfortable with who I am.”
She's even more comfortable showing off her stunning body as she did on instagram in a recent fitted pants suit.
In the post, Sullivan is wearing a custom designed pantsuit by L’Jai Amor, and in homage to her slick fit she added a sing-song caption to match her stunning ensemble: “I wear a suit to work. I wear a suit to church, I wear a suit to thot n bop, I wear a suit a whole damn lot. A suit I wear, it never fails. A suit I wear, and wear it well.”
With her second album, Reality Show, the attention is back on her monstrous vocals as well her body. After recently taking criticism for her size, the beautiful songstress reminds us just of how proud she is of herself.
Sullivan writes, “Real quick y'all... IM BIG!!!! #nowcarryon #sheesh lol seriously tho, first and foremost I'm an artist. So my main focus from now until the day I die will be my art. Secondly I'm a regular woman. My weight fluctuates depending on what I decide to put down my throat that week.”
She continued:
"If anything I'd hope that whatever u see in me serves as a reflection and inspires u to love or change certain things abt YOUR life. That's all I want to be for u. That's all I have to offer. Please don't idolize or...
... put me on a pedestal cuz I'll be the first to admit I can't live up to anyone's expectations. I'm figuring this shit out day by day like the rest of y'all. If me being or looking big makes you uncomfortable... Well I feel sorry for u. And if u must say something screenshot the pic and talk shit to ur friends thru text like the rest of us do! ????????. ALLS I'm saying is I love u regardless and want u to spend ur day being happy and growing as an individual. With all my [heart]."
Recently, Jazmine was featured on the cover of Ebony magazine alongside blogger, Gabi Fresh, Actress Danielle Brooks from "Orange is the New Black" and gorgeous singer, Chrisette Michelle. The cover celebrated the beauty of Black women in their curves and demystifying Black women's body image.
Jasmine ended her statement detailing her story about how she came to be an artist perfectly by saying, "And there I was, a young, thick girl with this strong voice."
